Saving the Trees at Dash Point State Park

 

Here, the crew has removed ivy from the ground - before and after photos - January 2010

The sea of ivy on the ground in the "before" photo not only makes the land impassable for humans, it creates a non-native monoculture that does not support wildlife (other than rats). As the ivy begins to climb up the trees, its vines thicken and strengthen, digging in and slowly choking and killing the tree. Ivy vines that were climbing up a tree are shown below, after being sawed off by Bernedine and her crew. Who knew ivy vines could be so thick??
